Americans are a little on the safe side when it come sex and sexuality. Americans are up in arms over Paris Hilton's Carl's Jr. commercial and TBS's The Real Gilligan's Island Commercial, but the rest of the world laughs at us. Now I am not saying that the racecar driver is right in this article, but it wasn't a big deal in Europe. Read #1 in CNNSI's 10 Spot by Peter McEntegart and tell me your thoughts. Click on the article too if you would like.

See, I think the 10 Spot doesn't address the prudeness of Americans. I disagree with the appropriatenes of the racecar driver sexually harassing a woman sports reporter. She didn't take it bad and filed the report, but if she had been offended, he would have violated harassment laws (if they were in the US). It is that crap I can't stand.
Now the Paris Hilton and the Gilligan's Island ads seem to be gathering two criticism. One they objectify women and two, they are inaapropriate for children.
As for the objectifying women part, I can't argue with that. That is a sticky subject and as a society we need to examine how much advertisements control what is perceived as beauty. It really bothers me that a lot of the amazing women in my life feel less valued when compared to the models with impossible bodies. Do I still like to look at the impossible bodies? You bet! But, I would never compare them to "real life" women.
Second and I think the real issue to this is the "inappropriate to children" issue. The FCC states that there is more tolerance on what can be shown on public airwaves between the hours of 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. So it can be aired there. It is why SNL can get away with a lot of stuff they do (or did, before they got so bland and stopped pushing the envelope). This is called "Safe Harbor".
Also, air it during shows that are inappropriate for kids. See this is all about the very vocal conservatives out there. They are real organized and make a stink over everything. This moral high ground shit is annoying as hell. These are the same people who flocked to see "The Passion of the Christ", one of the most horrifically violent movies in the history of film, and applauded it, bringing their children along for the ride.
If you air it during shows that are rated mature, then parents can control a little better at what their children watch. This is one instance where we can have it both ways: If we monitor our kids, then the content won't be seen by them and we can have more adult programming. (And if that doesn't work, change the freaking channel, or better yet, hand your kids a flippin' book and shut the t.v. off!)
Do you see the hypocrisy? These people don't represent Americans. Sure we may be a little prudish about sex, but we are no where near as bad as these right wingers make us look to be in the press.
Geez, these folks get all offended by what is being passed for as entertainment, but there is crap going on in the world today that could totally fuck their kids up and that goes by without a mention? To quote the late Nell Carter "Gimmee a Break"!
