Um...why do you say this is random? It was first observed before 1890's. The actual Patriots day is April 19th, but it's one of the fun ones that the state likes to put on a monday...like MLK "observed" (always monday)
On a side note: Most people don't give this day ANY credit at all and that makes me sad. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriots'_Day - last time I checked the American Revolution was a little important :D

LOL. I had no idea it was a serious holiday. Being a non-MA resident my first experience with it was the April of my freshman year right after the Patriots won the superbowl... Yeah I thought it was MA's lame way of celebrating that win... Whoops... There's my blond moment of a lifetime. Or my not caring either way because it was just another day out of class...
